Talk of a potential Hardik Pandya trade has resurfaced ahead of the IPL 2027 retention deadline, with several franchises understood to have made inquiries about the Mumbai Indians all-rounder.
One franchise is believed to have shown particularly strong interest, although there is no indication yet that a formal trade has been agreed. Mumbai Indians have held discussions with multiple teams regarding Pandya, with Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders among the franchises understood to have been involved.
Hardik Pandya remains one of the most valuable players in the IPL when fully fit. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball, along with his experience as a captain, makes him an attractive proposition despite recent concerns over his fitness and form.
Fitness remains the key question
Hardik Pandya has not played competitive cricket since the IPL and recently suffered an injury that ruled him out of India A’s ODI series against Australia, which begins on October 6.
That lack of game time is likely to be a major consideration for any franchise exploring a deal.
Teams will have to decide which version of Pandya they could be acquiring. His stint with Gujarat Titans produced some of the best cricket of his career, while his return to Mumbai Indians as captain proved far more difficult.
With India’s focus already turning towards next year’s World Cup, his fitness is also a priority at the international level.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has recently highlighted Pandya’s importance to the side, particularly because of his ability to provide runs at a strong strike rate while also bowling at useful pace.
Leadership adds to Pandya’s value
Hardik Pandya’s value is not limited to his all-round abilities.
He led Gujarat Titans in their first two IPL seasons, winning the title in their debut campaign before taking them to the final the following year. His leadership record with Mumbai Indians has been less impressive, although the circumstances surrounding that period were more complicated.
A move to a new franchise could potentially give Pandya a fresh environment and another opportunity to establish himself as a leader.
That possibility could make him even more attractive to teams looking beyond his numbers with bat and ball.
Mumbai have time, but not much
Mumbai Indians are believed to have spoken to a number of franchises about a possible trade. Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are among those understood to have been part of those discussions.
The possibility of Hardik Pandya moving to Chennai has generated particular attention, although the arrival of Zaheer Khan at CSK has complicated that narrative. Zaheer and Pandya worked together at Mumbai Indians, and their previous professional relationship has led to speculation about whether a reunion is realistic.
For now, however, the situation remains fluid.
The IPL trading window is currently open and will close one week before the auction. It will reopen a week after the auction and remain active until one month before the new season begins.
The more immediate deadline is November 15, when franchises must finalise their retention lists ahead of the mid-December auction in Goa.
Something more concrete could emerge over the next three to four weeks. Mumbai Indians, though, are understood to be in no rush.
A trade would need to make sense for all parties, particularly given Hardik Pandya’s fitness situation and his importance when fully fit. With the retention deadline approaching, the next few weeks could determine whether the latest trade talk develops into one of the IPL’s biggest moves ahead of the 2027 season.
