Mike Hussey is set for a bigger role with the Australian cricket team. Cricket Australia has named him consultant coach for the 2027 Ashes and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
He will also work as Australia’s T20 advisor until the 2028 T20 World Cup and the LA Olympics. His role will cover team planning, opposition analysis, player scouting and performance.
Hussey’s appointment comes after his eight-year stint as Chennai Super Kings’ batting coach came to an end. He had been part of CSK’s coaching staff since 2018.
Mike Hussey to begin work this month
Hussey will start his new role later this month. Australia are scheduled to host England in a T20I series.
He will also help the team prepare for the Test series against New Zealand.
Australia have a busy Test schedule over the next 12 months. Cricket Australia’s national teams general manager Ben Oliver said Hussey would give extra support to the T20 setup during this period.
Oliver also pointed to Hussey’s experience in the shortest format. Australia want to keep their T20 plans on track ahead of the 2028 events.
Hussey excited about Australia return
Hussey said he was happy to take up a more formal role with the national team.
“I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years,” he said.
He also spoke about Australia’s recent success. Hussey hopes to add value to both the coaching staff and the players.
Australia head coach Andrew McDonald welcomed the appointment. He said Hussey’s experience across formats and different competitions would help the team.
Hussey’s coaching experience
Hussey has worked with several teams since retiring as a player. He was part of England’s coaching staff when they won the 2022 T20 World Cup.
He also spent eight years with CSK as their batting coach. His time with the franchise ended this year as the team made changes to its coaching setup.
Australia now have a busy period ahead. Hussey will be part of the setup as they prepare for the Ashes, the 2027 World Cup and the next T20 cycle.
