Sai Sudharsan is understood to be nursing a niggle in his big toe, but has already resumed batting at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Medical staff at the facility are expected to clear him to travel to the island nation imminently. His arrival by the weekend means he will miss the three-day warm-up match in Colombo, which begins on Friday, but that outcome appears to be a calculated and acceptable compromise given the time still available before the Test series opener.
The left-hander is regarded as a key figure in Shubman Gill’s Test setup, particularly at the number three position. Across seven Test appearances to date, he has scored 383 runs at an average of 39 with three half-centuries, numbers that underline why his fitness is being monitored so closely ahead of a series that carries considerable weight in India’s World Test Championship cycle.
The Indian squad wasted no time settling into their preparations, holding their first training session at the NCC Ground in Colombo on Wednesday, a day after touching down in Sri Lanka. The three-day warm-up match wraps up on August 9, after which the squad travels to Galle for the first Test. The second Test is scheduled to begin in Colombo on August 23.
The BCCI also confirmed that four net bowlers have travelled with the squad to assist with preparations ahead of the Test series. Harsh Dubey, Shivang Kumar, Tanush Kotian and Vipraj Nigam have all made the trip to Sri Lanka in that capacity, providing the Indian batters with quality spin practice on surfaces that are expected to be among the more challenging they will encounter in this WTC cycle.
