Batting all-rounder Ayush Badoni has replaced Washington Sundar in the Indian Cricket Team squad for the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand, earning his maiden ODI call-up.
BCCI announced that Sundar, who has been an all-format regular for the Men in Blue, sustained an injury during the first India vs New Zealand ODI, played at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara.
The 26-year-old bowled five overs in the first ODI, conceding 25 runs. During the first inning, Washington showed discomfort near his ribs and was subsequently taken off the field.
While he did return to bat at number eight, making seven runs and taking the team to victory alongside KL Rahul, following the match, team captain Shubman Gill discussed the severity of Sundar’s injury, revealing that the all-rounder had sustained a side strain and was being taken for scans.
The scans must not have come out too positive, seeing that Sundar has now been sidelined for the rest of this three-match series. The morning after the game, BCCI announced that Washy has been ruled out for the remainder of the series.
“Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the remaining two matches of the ODI series,” read the BCCI statement.
Ayush Badoni Replaces Sundar In ODI Squad
In his place comes Ayush Badoni. The captain of the Delhi domestic team across formats, Badoni, is primarily known for his batting but also offers some right-arm finger spin.
Badoni, who hasn’t played a match for the Indian national team, has been a part of the T20I squad in recent times. The 26-year-old has been a domestic standout for a few years now.
He has impressed in limited-overs leagues across the nation, be it the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s top-level T20 domestic league, or the Delhi Premier League, where he has shown his slogging prowess.
Ayush has also been with the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL since 2022 and is a crucial part of the team, usually batting at number 6.
The Indian Cricket Team squad for the 2nd and 3rd India vs New Zealand ODIs is as follows –
Shubman Gill (C), Shreyas Iyer (VC), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ayush Badoni, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd Siraj, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh
