Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has decided to withdraw from the IPL 2026 auction, opting instead to feature in the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The decision brings a temporary pause to a long and successful IPL journey that has spanned 14 seasons.

Du Plessis confirmed the move through a heartfelt message shared on social media, reflecting on his time in India’s premier T20 league and the impact it has had on his career.

“After 14 incredible seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to enter the auction this year,” du Plessis wrote. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s one I’ve made with immense gratitude when I look back at the journey.”

IPL: A League That Shaped His Career

Calling the IPL a defining chapter of his cricketing life, du Plessis highlighted the relationships and experiences he gained over the years.

“This league has played a massive role in my growth,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to share dressing rooms with world-class players, represent iconic franchises, and play in front of fans whose passion is unmatched. India gave me friendships, lessons, and memories that shaped me not just as a cricketer, but as a person.”

With 154 IPL appearances, du Plessis remains one of the most consistent overseas performers in league history and currently sits as the fourth-highest run-scorer among international players in the tournament.

‘This Isn’t Goodbye’: Door Still Open for an IPL Return

Despite stepping away from the auction, du Plessis made it clear that his IPL story may not be over.

“Fourteen years is a long time, and I’m proud of everything this chapter has meant to me,” he said. “India will always have a special place in my heart, and this certainly isn’t goodbye. You’ll see me again.”

Turning Attention to the Pakistan Super League

For now, the veteran batter is ready to embrace a new experience by committing to the PSL, which overlaps with the IPL window between April and May.

“This year, I wanted a fresh challenge, and I’ll be playing in the PSL,” du Plessis explained. “It’s an exciting opportunity—to experience a new league, a new country, and a different environment. The PSL is full of talent and energy, and I’m really looking forward to the warmth and hospitality Pakistan is known for.”

Du Plessis is no stranger to the league, having previously represented Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, making six PSL appearances between 2019 and 2021.

Recent IPL Stint and Franchise Journey

In IPL 2025, du Plessis featured for Delhi Capitals, scoring 202 runs in nine matches. He also stepped in as captain for two games when regular skipper Axar Patel was sidelined due to injury. Despite his leadership role, DC released him ahead of the 2026 auction.

Over the years, du Plessis has represented Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rising Pune Supergiants, and Delhi Capitals, winning two IPL titles with CSK.

A New Chapter, Not the End

While fans won’t see Faf du Plessis at the IPL auction this year, his legacy in the league remains firmly intact. As he gears up for the PSL, the move reflects not a farewell—but a seasoned cricketer’s desire to keep evolving, exploring, and competing at the highest level.
