India registered a comfortable victory in the 3rd T20I against South Africa at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday, December 14, but concerns around the form of the team’s senior batters refuse to fade. Despite chasing down a modest target of 118 with ease, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav once again failed to deliver substantial contributions.
Gill scored 28 off 28 balls, while skipper Suryakumar managed 12 from 11 deliveries. India crossed the line with seven wickets in hand and 25 balls to spare, taking a 2–1 lead in the five-match series. However, with the T20 World Cup just two months away and only seven T20Is left before the global event, the lack of runs from the captain and vice-captain remains a talking point.
Abhishek Sharma Backs Gill and Suryakumar Amid Criticism
While criticism continues to mount, Abhishek Sharma has thrown his full support behind the struggling duo, expressing confidence that both players will come good when it matters the most.
Speaking after India’s win, Abhishek underlined his belief in their match-winning abilities, drawing from years of playing alongside them.
“I tell you one thing straight away that trust me, these two guys are going to win matches at the World Cup and before in other series as well,” Abhishek said after helping India take a 2-1 series lead. “I have been playing with them for so long, especially with Shubman, so I know where he can win the match, what are the conditions, irrespective of the team.
“I have a lot of faith in him from the beginning and I hope everyone will see it very soon and everyone will have faith,” Abhishek stated.
Abhishek’s backing comes at a crucial moment, as India look to strike the right balance between form, experience, and confidence heading into a 20-team T20 World Cup.
“I’m looking for runs, not out of form” – Suryakumar Yadav
Addressing the growing chatter around his own performances, Suryakumar Yadav played down concerns, insisting that his preparation has been strong despite the lack of runs in match situations.
The Indian captain explained that his focus remains on controlling the process rather than worrying about immediate results.
“The thing is, I’ve been batting beautifully in the nets,” Suryakumar said at the post-match presentation. “I’m trying everything that’s in my control. When the runs have to come, they’ll definitely come. But yes, I’m looking for runs, not out of form, but definitely out of runs.”
Suryakumar’s calm response reflects his confidence in his method, even as pressure builds with every passing game.
What Lies Ahead for India in the Series?
India and South Africa will now shift focus to the 4th T20I, scheduled to be played at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, December 17. With the series finely poised and the World Cup looming, the upcoming matches could prove decisive for players searching for form and rhythm.
For Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav, the clock is ticking—but faith within the camp remains strong.
