Indian batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi announced his arrival on the continental stage with a breathtaking 171 off just 95 balls in the opening match of the Under-19 Asia Cup against the UAE on Friday. The sensational knock left the cricketing world stunned and underlined why the teenager is being spoken about as India’s next big superstar.
Just days shy of turning 15, Suryavanshi fell agonisingly short of rewriting history, missing Ambati Rayudu’s long-standing Indian youth ODI record of 177 by a mere six runs. Yet, the scale, intent and dominance of his innings made it one of the most memorable performances in Under-19 Asia Cup history.
A Power-Hitting Masterclass at Under-19 Level
Batting first, India Under-19s piled on a massive 433 for 6, largely driven by Suryavanshi’s fearless strokeplay. The left-hander smashed nine boundaries and an astonishing 14 sixes, dismantling the UAE bowling attack with ease before being bowled while attempting an audacious paddle sweep in the 33rd over.
The target proved far too steep for the UAE, who were restricted to 199 for 7, handing India a 234-run victory. Unsurprisingly, Suryavanshi was named Player of the Match for his match-defining innings.
Consistency Beyond His Years
This latest century adds to a rapidly growing list of extraordinary feats by the teenage sensation. Just last month, Suryavanshi produced a jaw-dropping 42-ball 144 against the UAE at the Rising Stars Asia Cup in Doha, recording one of the fastest hundreds by an Indian in men’s T20 cricket. His century in that game came off just 32 deliveries, placing him among the fastest ever in the format globally.
He also etched his name into domestic cricket history by smashing an unbeaten 108 off 61 balls in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, becoming the youngest centurion in the tournament’s history.
From IPL History to International Promise
The year 2025 has been nothing short of transformational for Suryavanshi. After becoming the youngest player ever bought at an IPL auction at the age of 13, he went on to create history by scoring an IPL century for Rajasthan Royals—a blistering 101 off 38 balls against Gujarat Titans.
In seven matches as an opener during IPL 2025, he scored 252 runs at a staggering strike rate of 206.55, showcasing maturity and fearlessness well beyond his age.
Dominating on Overseas Tours
Following the IPL, Suryavanshi continued his purple patch on India Under-19 tours of England and Australia. He hammered a 78-ball hundred in a four-day match in Brisbane and finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the multi-day series against Australia Under-19s as India clinched a 2-0 victory.
Earlier in England, he amassed 355 runs in the one-day series at a strike rate of 174.01, firmly establishing himself as a multi-format force.
World Cup Next on the Horizon
With performances like these, Suryavanshi is now considered a sure-shot selection for the upcoming ICC Under-19 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Namibia and Zimbabwe. If his current trajectory is any indication, Indian cricket may be witnessing the rise of a generational talent.
At just 14, Vaibhav Suryavanshi isn’t just breaking records — he’s redefining expectations.
