Since its launch in 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has transformed cricket and created a generation of superstars. With every mega auction, franchises are forced to reshape their squads, often letting go of long-serving players to meet retention rules and budget limits. While many cricketers extended their IPL careers by switching teams, a rare few took a different route.
For some legends, the connection with a franchise went far beyond contracts and auctions. Loyalty, identity, and legacy mattered more than pulling on a new jersey. These icons chose to retire rather than represent another IPL team, ensuring their names remain forever linked with the franchises they helped build.
Here are three IPL legends who walked away on their own terms instead of switching franchises.
#3. Kieron Pollard – The Face of Mumbai Indians
Few overseas players have defined a franchise the way Kieron Pollard did for Mumbai Indians (MI). The West Indies all-rounder joined MI in 2010 and became a cornerstone of the team’s dominance over the next decade. From pressure-filled run chases to crucial breakthroughs with the ball, Pollard delivered whenever Mumbai needed him most.
Across 189 IPL matches, Pollard scored 3,412 runs at an exceptional strike rate, often turning matches around in a matter of overs. He also claimed 69 wickets, making him one of the most reliable all-rounders in league history. His impact was central to MI’s rise as a powerhouse, including their first title in 2013 and multiple championships afterward.
Instead of continuing his IPL journey elsewhere, Pollard chose to retire after the 2022 season. He remains part of the Mumbai Indians family, serving in the support staff—an enduring symbol of loyalty between player and franchise.
#2. Andre Russell – A Kolkata Knight Riders Game-Changer
When fans think of explosive IPL performances, Andre Russell is one of the first names that comes to mind. Although he made his IPL debut with Delhi Daredevils in 2012, it was after joining Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2014 that Russell truly found his calling.
That season ended with KKR lifting the IPL trophy, and Russell soon evolved into one of the most feared all-rounders in T20 cricket. Known for his brutal power-hitting and wicket-taking ability, the Jamaican star amassed over 2,400 runs at a jaw-dropping strike rate above 170, while also picking up 100+ wickets for the franchise.
A cult hero at Eden Gardens, Russell crossed the 300-run mark in four separate seasons and played more than 100 matches for KKR. Rather than switching teams late in his career, he opted to retire and later took on the role of Power Coach ahead of the 2026 season, ensuring his association with KKR continued off the field.
#1. Suresh Raina – Mr. IPL and the Soul of CSK
No list of IPL greats is complete without Suresh Raina, fondly known as “Mr. IPL.” One of the league’s most dependable performers, Raina was the heartbeat of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for over a decade.
Except for the two seasons (2016 and 2017) when CSK were suspended—during which he played for Gujarat Lions—Raina’s IPL career was entirely intertwined with the Chennai franchise. He featured in 205 matches, scoring 5,528 runs, and remarkably crossed the 350-run mark in 12 consecutive seasons. Raina also chipped in with the ball, picking up 25 wickets.
When he went unsold at the 2022 IPL auction, Raina made a clear choice. Instead of donning another team’s colours, he chose retirement, closing the chapter as a true CSK legend. Today, he remains involved with the sport as a commentator and analyst, his IPL legacy firmly intact.
Loyalty Over Longevity
In an era dominated by auctions and transfers, Pollard, Russell, and Raina stood apart. Their decisions highlighted that for some players, legacy outweighs longevity. By choosing retirement over switching franchises, they ensured their names would forever be associated with the teams they helped turn into IPL giants.
