The India vs South Africa 3rd T20I got underway at the stunning Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala, on Sunday, December 14. With the five-match series finely poised at 1–1, both teams entered the contest looking to seize momentum after South Africa’s strong comeback win in New Chandigarh.
As expected, the chilly conditions and the high-altitude venue played a role in shaping team strategies, with a few notable changes grabbing attention even before the first ball was bowled.
IND vs SA 3rd T20I Toss Update
India skipper Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and opted to bowl first, believing conditions would improve for batting later in the evening. The decision also came with confirmation of two forced changes to India’s Playing XI.
South Africa captain Aiden Markram, on the other hand, expressed confidence in batting first despite the cold weather, announcing three changes to the Proteas lineup for the Dharamshala encounter.
Why Is Jasprit Bumrah Not Playing Today?
The biggest talking point from India’s team announcement was the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. At the toss, it was confirmed that the star pacer has returned home due to personal reasons and is unavailable for the third T20I.
Alongside Bumrah, Axar Patel also missed out, with the Indian captain revealing that the all-rounder is unwell. These developments forced India to reshuffle their bowling attack, bringing Harshit Rana and Kuldeep Yadav into the Playing XI.
Sanju Samson was once again left out, with the team management continuing to back Jitesh Sharma as the wicketkeeper, while vice-captain Shubman Gill retained his spot at the top of the order alongside Abhishek Sharma. Although no official reason was given for Samson’s omission, India appear keen on maintaining stability in their batting combination.
South Africa Make Three Changes to Their XI
Despite winning the previous match, South Africa opted to tweak their lineup. Corbin Bosch, Anrich Nortje, and Tristan Stubbs were drafted into the Playing XI, while George Linde, Lutho Sipamla, and David Miller remained unavailable.
The changes were made with an eye on adapting to the conditions and strengthening their pace attack under lights.
What Did the Captains Say at the Toss?
Aiden Markram, South Africa Captain
Very cold, it’s a beautiful venue. It was a good response. It was nice to see that. Tonight it’s important to perform. It’s a challenge. We’ll have to asses the conditions up front. Hopefully we get a good score. We have played a couple of games here, the boys are pretty excited. We have three changes tonight – Bosch, Nortje, Stubbs come in.
Suryakumar Yadav, India Captain
We’re going to bowl first. It’s been a good wicket all weekend and I don’t think it’ll change much, but there is a little bit of dew already and we feel it might get heavier later on. So, we’re happy to bowl first. It’s a wonderful place, wonderful people, and a fantastic ground. Hopefully when we bat and bowl, we can give everyone some good entertainment.
Every game is important. The way they played in the second game showed the beauty of this sport. What matters most is how you come back, and that’s what we want to do tonight, play our best game, enjoy ourselves, and be fearless. If we stay switched on for all three hours, that will be key for us.
It looks like a good pitch. We’ve made two forced changes. Axar Patel misses out as he’s unwell, and Jasprit Bumrah misses out due to personal reasons back home. Harshit Rana comes in, and Kuldeep Yadav comes in.
