Ashes 2025–26: Steve O’Keefe Backs Brendon McCullum to Continue as England Head Coach

Former Australia spinner Steve O’Keefe has come out in support of Brendon McCullum, urging the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to stay patient with the head coach despite England’s tough start to the Ashes 2025–26 series.

England currently trail 2–0 in the five-match contest after suffering heavy defeats in the opening two Tests, a situation that has sparked debate around McCullum’s future and the effectiveness of England’s aggressive “Bazball” philosophy in Australian conditions.

O’Keefe Highlights McCullum’s Strong Overall Record

Speaking on SEN Radio, O’Keefe stressed that McCullum’s tenure should be judged on long-term results rather than a single series. He pointed out that England’s win percentage under McCullum is significantly better than during the latter stages of the Joe Root–Chris Silverwood era.

“At the end of the Root and Silverwood period, England won just one out of 17 Tests,” O’Keefe said. “Under McCullum, they’re winning close to 58 percent of their games. That’s a huge improvement.”

The former spinner also reminded critics that no England team has won a Test series in Australia since 2010–11, underlining the difficulty of touring Down Under.

“Plenty of people might say his position is under threat, but if it were up to me, I’d stick with him,” O’Keefe added.

Call for Flexibility in Australian Conditions

While backing McCullum to continue, O’Keefe also offered constructive criticism. He suggested that England’s head coach needs to be more adaptable and receptive to feedback, especially when facing the unique challenges of Australian pitches and conditions.

“McCullum has introduced a bold and exciting way of playing,” he said. “But Test cricket has been around for over a century. You can’t roll out the same plan everywhere and expect different results, especially when you’re getting beaten convincingly.”

According to O’Keefe, England may need to fine-tune their aggressive approach, rather than abandon it entirely, to remain competitive in hostile overseas tours.

Bazball Under Scrutiny as England Struggle

McCullum’s influence has undeniably reshaped England’s Test mindset, encouraging fearless batting and proactive decision-making. However, the approach has faced criticism during the current Ashes, particularly after England’s batting collapses in both Tests, each ending in eight-wicket defeats.

Despite the setbacks, the ECB appears unlikely to make any immediate changes, with the focus shifting to how England respond in the remaining matches.

Third Test Set to Begin in Adelaide

The 3rd Ashes Test is scheduled to begin on December 17 at the Adelaide Oval, a venue traditionally offering more batting-friendly conditions. With the series still alive, England will be eager to show resilience and prove that McCullum’s methods can still deliver results in Australia.

    Final Word

Steve O’Keefe’s backing adds weight to the argument for continuity over reaction. While England’s Ashes campaign has stumbled early, the former Australian believes McCullum deserves time — provided he remains willing to evolve and adapt when circumstances demand it.
