Team India continued their winning momentum under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, bouncing back strongly in Dharamsala to take the lead in the five-match T20I series. While the victory boosted India’s confidence, the spotlight once again fell on their skipper’s ongoing struggles with the bat.
Despite a comfortable run chase in the picturesque hill venue, questions lingered over Suryakumar Yadav’s decision-making—particularly his choice to delay his entry while India cruised towards the target. Former India batter Mohammad Kaif, a onetime teammate of Gautam Gambhir, did not hold back while analysing the situation.
India had suffered a setback in New Chandigarh, but the bowlers ensured a commanding response in Dharamsala. With the target well within reach and the top order firing, it seemed like the perfect chance for both the captain and vice-captain to spend time in the middle and rediscover form. However, that moment never truly came for Suryakumar.
“Questions are about his form” – Mohammad Kaif Questions Suryakumar Yadav’s Approach
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Mohammad Kaif expressed surprise at Suryakumar Yadav’s decision not to walk in at No. 3, especially when the match situation was tailor-made for a confidence-boosting knock.
With Abhishek Sharma attacking early in the powerplay and the chase firmly under control, Kaif felt the Indian captain could have sealed the game himself with a fluent, unbeaten innings.
“It would have been good for the upcoming matches. He is a solid player, and no one is questioning his ability with the bat,” Kaif said.
Kaif was clear that the criticism wasn’t about skill, but about rhythm and confidence—something only time at the crease can restore.
“Questions are about his form. He has been a good player; hence, questions are about his form. He had a good opportunity to bat and stay not out, which could have been good for the remaining T20Is before the World Cup. One inning can transform a player into a different player. When Tilak Varma was sent at No. 3, cameras were at Suryakumar Yadav,” he continued.
“You can’t hide in the dugout if you want to make a comeback” – Kaif’s Sharp Reminder
Kaif went a step further, suggesting that hesitation during lean phases is natural—but avoiding responsibility isn’t the answer.
“But you have to be brave. You can’t hide in the dugout if you want to make a comeback. You have to face that challenge to rise from that phase,” opined Mohammad Kaif on Suryakumar Yadav.
By the time Suryakumar eventually arrived at the crease, there were barely any runs left to chase. Kaif pointed out that even staying unbeaten would have limited his scoring opportunity, whereas an earlier entry could have allowed the skipper to bat through the innings.
“Shubman Gill’s intent in those 10–15 balls was excellent” – Kaif Praises Positives
While Suryakumar faced scrutiny, Shubman Gill earned praise for the clarity in his approach during his brief stay at the crease. Kaif highlighted Gill’s early composure and footwork as signs of intent, even though the innings didn’t convert into a big score.
“Shubman Gill’s intent in those 10-15 balls was excellent. The footwork was also outstanding in the first boundary he picked up. His plan was to hit a four in every ball, but he was not searching for it. It was the correct plan. His body language was one of wanting to place the ball well,” noticed Mohammad Kaif.
However, Kaif also analysed Gill’s dismissal, noting that a lapse in technique—possibly stemming from a lack of recent big innings—proved costly.
“Cricket is a game of form. If you get lazy or late with your footwork, the wicket falls. A batter cannot afford to play even one shot wrong, and Gill played one wrong shot to get out,” he concluded.
What This Means for India Going Forward?
With the T20 World Cup approaching, form and intent are becoming crucial discussion points for India’s leadership group. While results remain positive, voices like Mohammad Kaif’s underline the importance of senior players stepping up during pressure-free moments—especially when confidence is fragile.
As the series progresses, all eyes will be on Suryakumar Yadav’s response—both as captain and batter—to silence the criticism and lead from the front.
