India won the toss and chose to bowl, making two changes, most notably bringing back Sanju Samson for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. India controlled the first half of the powerplay, removing Phil Salt, but everything shifted after that. Jos Buttler broke out his scoop shot against Prasidh Krishna and took on Arshdeep Singh, while Harry Brook cashed in on a dropped catch (Shivam Dube misjudged a chance off a top edge) by smashing back-to-back sixes.
The carnage escalated after the powerplay. Jos Buttler tore into Axar Patel for 25 runs in one over and reached his fastest-ever T20I fifty, with Brook getting there in the next over. Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav were both hammered for expensive overs (24 and 21 runs respectively), pushing England to 189/1 after 15 overs.
Buttler brought up his century with a six off Axar. Dube managed to remove both Buttler and Jacob Bethell in the penultimate over but still leaked three sixes and a four around those wickets. Prince denied Brook his century in the final over, but Brook’s unbeaten 95 helped England post 257/3, breaking their own record for the highest total ever against India in the format.
India fumbled with the bat
India’s reply never got going. Abhishek Sharma fell early to Jofra Archer, though Samson and Ishan Kishan briefly steadied things in the powerplay before Samson holed out off Sam Curran. Ishan and Shreyas kept India in touch, reaching 110 at the halfway mark, but Shreyas fell soon after drinks and Ishan followed, caught by Salt off a slog sweep. Tilak Varma’s rapid half-century was the only real highlight late on, but India still needed 111 off the last six overs and the chase fell well short.
Final score: England 257/3 (Buttler 131, Brook 95*) beat India 201/8 (Ishan Kishan 56, Tilak Varma 53; Sam Curran 3-36) by 56 runs.
