India have named their squads for the upcoming home series against West Indies, with Shubman Gill captaining the ODI side and Shreyas Iyer taking charge for the T20Is. The announcement also confirmed that Nitish Kumar Reddy has been pulled from the Asian Games squad to join the ODI setup, a decision that reflects the selectors’ priorities as two assignments overlap on the calendar.
Gill’s ODI squad features the experienced pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, while KL Rahul has been named vice-captain, stepping into the role that Iyer had filled during the previous ODI series against England. Iyer will instead focus on leading India at the Asian Games as well as the one-off T20I against Japan, with a full complement of T20I regulars rejoining him after the Games conclude.
India vs West Indies Series Brings Fresh Faces into the ODI Setup
Naman Dhir, the Punjab batter, has earned his maiden ODI call-up alongside Auqib Nabi, two fresh faces rewarded for their domestic performances. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who featured in the Afghanistan ODIs but was not part of the England white-ball squad, returns as a backup opener option.
Several players who toured England have been left out of the ODI squad, with Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube all committed to the Asian Games instead. Rana is the exception, having been replaced in that squad by Yash Thakur.
Rishabh Pant’s omission from the ODI squad is among the more notable selection calls. Dhruv Jurel has been preferred as the second wicketkeeper, with Pant instead named captain of Rest of India for the Irani Cup.
On the T20I front, Varun Chakravarthy has been ruled out of both the Japan fixture and the Asian Games due to a side strain, with Vipraj Nigam coming in as his replacement.
