Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) icon Andre Russell has officially announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, bringing the curtain down on one of the most explosive careers the tournament has ever seen. While Russell will no longer feature as a player, his journey with KKR is far from over. The West Indies allrounder will transition into a new role within the franchise, joining the support staff as the team’s designated “power coach” ahead of IPL 2026.

The decision came after KKR chose not to retain Russell before the 2026 season. Speaking in an emotional video message, the 37-year-old said it was the right moment to step away while still at his peak in the eyes of fans.
“I’ve decided to retire from the IPL,” Russell said. “I’ve had some incredible moments—hitting sixes, winning games, earning MVP awards. But I didn’t want to fade away. I wanted to leave when people still feel I have more to give, not when they think I stayed too long.”
Russell added that the thought of playing against KKR in another jersey never felt right. After multiple conversations with KKR CEO Venky Mysore and franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan, the idea of starting a new chapter off the field felt natural.
A New Chapter: Andre Russell, the ‘Power Coach’
Russell will now be part of KKR’s revamped backroom staff, where he will work closely with players on power-hitting, athleticism, mindset, and match intensity—areas that defined his own IPL success.
“When I heard the term ‘power coach’, I smiled,” Russell said. “That’s who I am. Power with the bat, energy in the field, impact with the ball. I believe I can help players in every department.”
His appointment strengthens KKR’s support setup, which will be led by new head coach Abhishek Nayar. The franchise has also added Tim Southee as bowling coach, Shane Watson as assistant coach, while Dwayne Bravo continues as team mentor.
A Legendary IPL Career with KKR
Andre Russell’s association with KKR is one of the most iconic player-franchise partnerships in IPL history. He played a pivotal role in KKR’s title-winning campaigns in 2014 and 2024 and was crowned the IPL Most Valuable Player in 2019.

Why KKR Released Russell Ahead of IPL 2026?
KKR had retained Russell for INR 12 crore ahead of the 2025 mega auction. However, releasing him before the 2026 auction added INR 18 crore back into their purse under the IPL retention rules. Alongside Russell, several other big names were released, giving KKR the largest auction purse—INR 64.3 crore, though they currently have multiple squad spots to fill.
